Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or you just need to get away, Yountville, California is the perfect place to escape! My husband, Jeff, and I experienced a wonderful weekend there recently, as we celebrated twenty-seven years of love and marriage.
In the many years of living in the Bay Area, we have been to Napa “I-don’t-even-know-how-many” times, but we’ve never taken the time to hunker down in one of the towns that make up our nearby, wonderful wine country…until now. Why Yountville? Why not? You gotta start somewhere, right? And, what we got was 36 hours in heaven. So these are my five reasons why I love Yountville:
5. A scenic walk in the country.
Naked vineyards to my right, and an empty road ahead of me. Nature. Solitude. Peaceful. (Jeff opted to work out at the gym…silly man!)
4. Ridiculously Good Food.
Instead of making reservations for dinner at one of the many fabulous restaurants in Yountville, we decided to go with our favorite dining strategy…bar-hopping. I love bar-hopping–I get to experience 2-3 restaurants instead of just one! We started at Redd, where we enjoyed a glazed pork belly bun. Then, mozied on down to Bottega, and finally, Redd Wood for a warm brussels sprout salad and a pizza. And, all within a few blocks! Just a short walk there, and a short stumble back to the hotel.
3. Ridiculously Good Wine.
Stay in town, and enjoy ten tasting rooms, or hop in your car and try the wineries along the Silverado Trail. They each provided us with nourishment (really?…yes, really) and the always important wine education that we always seem to forget once we’ve left the premises. Me: “Do we open this now or wait ten years?” Him: “I don’t remember.” Me: “Do we share it with friends?” Him: “Depends on the friends.” Thank you, Clo du Val, Pine Ridge, and Miner Family …we’ll be back!
2. Great Shopping!
C’mon…I can’t NOT shop!
And the Number One reason why I love Yountville…
1. Hotel Yountville
The accommodations, the lobby, the outdoor fireplace, the pool area, the spa…seriously, this hotel is delightful…amazing…beautiful…I could go on and on.
Upon check-in, we were given a list of local wineries that partner with the hotel and offer discounts (or free) tastings to hotel guests. We returned from our outing (see reason #3 above) just in time to enjoy a nightly wine-pouring of a winery partner (that night, they were serving Hill Family Wines). We played a game of Scrabble and chatted with other guests before getting ready for dinner. The staff was incredibly accommodating. When we checked out at noon the following day, we were allowed to shower and change in the Spa Acqua after my walk/Jeff’s work-out (see reason #1 above). Can I just live there?
It’s been a few days since we returned home, and I’m happy to say that the magic hasn’t worn off yet. Best of all, we plan on returning to Yountville with friends sometime in the next few months. Sorry, Calistoga…you’re going to have to wait.
